Explosive
Power
Increasing
explosive power is important for any sport or
activity that requires fast sprint sections,
including cycling, surfing, windsurfing/kitesurfing,
soccer, tennis, martial arts and many more.
Whilst this style of sport and activity requires
endurance fitness to last the whole game/session,
it is the explosive strength, anaerobic fitness
(short duration) that enables important techniques
to be delivered smoothly with power.
The
study of Physics defines Power as being the
combination of force and speed:
Power
= Force x Velocity
(Where
velocity is speed with a directional component)

This
equation shows that if we want to increase the
power of a technique, we need to increase the
force or speed of movement; hopefully both.
Only increasing the strength component at slow
speed would theoretically increase power, as
would an increased speed at low weight. Experience
shows however that to really get gains in the
capacity of the fast twitch muscle fibres responsible
for explosive strength, fast movement at moderate
weight works best.
Having
a smart, structured program that leads to this
advance style of training is important and should
only be attempted by experienced persons or
under quality supervision, with perfect posture/technique.
The combination of high weight, a fast speed
of movement, perfect posture/technique and an
experienced personal trainer from Foreshore
Fitness means injuries are prevented and the
gains in power are realised.
Above
and below are two exercises that may be included
in your program with your personal trainer,
which are great for increasing explosive strength;.
